The Business Development module helps you find additional work with the clients you already represent. Opportunities are grouped by technology area, with emphasis on the fields where your firm has demonstrated strength and proven results.
To begin, select Business Development from the menu on the left side.
Finding expansion opportunities
Scroll down the main page to the client table. Each of your clients is broken down by CPC class, so you can see which specific technology areas hold room to grow. Page through the table at the bottom to view all of your clients with expansion opportunities.
To jump straight to a client, use the Search companies bar in the top right. Make sure you are searching for a company that is already your client — the module is built around existing relationships.
How areas of strength are determined
Your firm's areas of strength combine two lists:
The 10 CPC subclasses where your firm files the most applications
The 10 CPC subclasses where your firm has the highest filing share
Tech Area Snapshot
Click any client to open their detail view. The first tab is the Tech Area Snapshot, which shows your prosecution stats for that client: filings over the last five years, allowance rate, and other key metrics, along with supporting graphs.
Below the stats you will also find:
Top counsel filing — which other outside counsel files for this client
Most recent filings — the client's latest applications
You vs. Current Counsel
The second tab gives a more in-depth view of how your firm is performing compared to the other outside counsel prosecuting this client.
You can change the metric you want to see — for example filings, allowance rate, or months to disposition — and select which firms to display from the client's top firms.
Export the comparison by clicking Export CSV.
Compare Competitors
The third tab shows a heat map using the same metrics as the previous tab, but comparing this client against their competitors rather than against other law firms.
You will see total applications, allowance rate, and other metrics, and you can select which competitors to include.
Prosecution Issues
The fourth tab surfaces cases in the client's portfolio where a change in approach may help. Applications are sorted into four categories.
Apps that need interviews
A list of pending applications with at least 2 office actions and no interviews where the examiner's interview win rate is at least 20 percentage points higher than the examiner's RCE win rate.
Appeal opportunities
A list of a pending application with at least 3 office actions, 2 RCEs, and no appeals where the examiner's appeal win rate is at least 20 percentage points higher than the examiner's RCE win rate.
Long prosecutions
A list of applications that are pending and have had more office actions than any allowed application in front of the assigned examiner. The examiner must have more than 10 disposed applications for inclusion.
Low allowance rate examiners
A list of applications that are pending and have had more office actions than any allowed application in front of the assigned examiner. The examiner must have more than 10 disposed applications for inclusion.
