Key Uses:

1. Where Your Assets Are Blocking Competitors

  • See which of your applications are cited in 102 and 103 rejections against competitors’ applications.

  • These citations indicate where your portfolio is directly or partially blocking competitors from securing claims

  • Filter by competitor or technology domain (CPC/Tech Center).

  • Identify:

    • Which competitors you are blocking most often.

    • Emerging competitors entering your space.

    • Assets that may be strong candidates for licensing or enforcement.

  • Access a quick list of your patents that most frequently block competitors. This can also guide maintenance fee decisions.

Example: In this heat map, Hyundai’s assets are shown blocking applications from Ford, Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen. The darker shades highlight the USPTO Technology Centers where Hyundai most frequently blocks competitors, helping identify the most competitive areas of innovation:

  • Use this insight to adjust claim strategy and avoid rejections in future filings.

Example: This heat map shows when and where Hyundai’s applications were blocked by competitor prior art. Each row represents a filing year, while the columns represent USPTO Technology Centers. Darker shades indicate the years and tech areas where Hyundai faced the highest number of citations, helping uncover trends in competitor activity over time:
