What You Need Before You Start

  • A ChatGPT Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, or Education account

  • OAuth credentials (Client ID and Client Secret) from your Juristat account team

Step 1: Enable Developer Mode

In the ChatGPT web app, go to Settings > Apps > Advanced settings and toggle on Developer Mode. This is a one-time setting that allows you to connect custom MCP servers to ChatGPT.

Step 2: Create the Juristat App

Go to Settings > Apps. Next to Advanced settings, click Create app.

Fill in the following:

  • Name: Juristat

  • Description: Juristat patent intelligence: examiner analytics, application search, office action analysis, and prosecution metrics for USPTO patent data.

  • Authentication: OAuth

Before clicking Create, expand Advanced Settings at the bottom of the form. Configure the OAuth panel as follows:

  • Registration method: Change from "Dynamic Client Registration" to User-Defined OAuth Client

  • Callback URL: Copy this URL and send it to your Juristat account manager or support@juristat.com

  • OAuth Client ID: Enter the Client ID provided by Juristat

  • OAuth Client Secret: Enter the Client Secret provided by Juristat

  • Token endpoint auth method: client_secret_post

You can find your 0Auth credentials by:

  • Logging into your Juristat Account β†’ Settings β†’ MCP Tab

Check the "I understand and want to continue" box, then click Create. ChatGPT will connect to the Juristat MCP server and discover the available tools. The app will appear under Drafts in your Apps settings.

Step 3: Wait for Juristat to Register Your Callback URL

Once Juristat receives your Callback URL, the team will register it in the authentication system and confirm when it is ready. Allow up to one business day for this step.

You cannot complete the connection until Juristat confirms registration.

Step 4: Use Juristat in a Conversation

Start a new chat. Click the + button in the message composer, select Developer Mode, and choose the Juristat app. You can also type @Juristat to call the tool in any conversation.

The first time you use the app, you will be prompted to sign in with your Juristat credentials to authorize the connection. After that, subsequent sessions will use your existing authorization.

Try a query to confirm the connection is working:

  • "Get me the art unit report for art unit 2100."

  • "Search for recent patent applications filed by Microsoft."

  • "Summarize patent application 12000005."

If the agent returns results, the connection is working.

Step 5: Publishing to Your Organization (Business, Enterprise, and Education plans)

If you are on a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Education plan, an admin or workspace owner can publish the app so other users in your organization can access it without configuring it themselves.

Go to Workplace Settings > Apps, find the app under Drafts, and click Publish. Once published, the app appears in your workspace's approved apps list with a "custom" label.

Troubleshooting

  • "Oops, something went wrong" or authentication error This happens when the Callback URL has not yet been registered by Juristat. Confirm with your account manager that registration is complete before trying again.

  • Agent is not returning results Try starting a new chat and simplifying your prompt. Complex queries can take 1 to 3 minutes to process. If the issue persists, contact Juristat support.

  • Tools are missing or out of date Go to Settings > Apps, open the Juristat app, and click Refresh to pull the latest tools from the MCP server.
