Juristat Expert Search eliminates the need to hire recruiters and allows firms to search for a trusted, industry-leading database of expert witnesses from IPRs, PGRs, and CBMs.

In addition to finding the most reliable experts, unlimited access to our database allows for opposition research in PTAB proceedings. You can review experts retained in cases against you, see positions they've supported in the past, and find contradictions in their past arguments.

Getting Started

To get started with Expert Search, you'll first want to use the "Expert Search" tab in the search bar on Juristat's home screen.

Next, you can either type in an expert's name, a patent number, or a keyword to begin your search.

Search by Expert Name

If you search by an expert's name, simply click on their name in the Expert column to see that expert's full history in PTAB proceedings. The table will show all detected IPRs, PGRs, and CBMs this expert has participated in.

If you search by expert name, you’ll see a table with the following columns available. You can add or take away columns by editing them (covered below).

  1. AIA Review Number (the IPR/PGR/CBM number hyperlinked to that case in the USPTO database)

  2. Application Number (the application number of the underlying patent)

  3. Est. Hourly Rate (the estimated fee parsed from the expert's declaration in the case, where available)

  4. Expert Side (the side the expert was on in the proceeding - either Petitioner or Patent Owner)

  5. Filing Date (Date the IPR/PGR/CBM was filed)

  6. Institution Date (Date the IPR/PGR/CBM was instituted)

  7. Patent Number (patent number of the underlying patent at issue)

  8. Art Unit (art unit of the underlying patent at issue)

  9. Tech Center (Tech center of the underlying patent at issue)

  10. Expert Name (name of the expert)

  11. Petitioner (Name of the lead petitioner (e.g. "Ford Motor Co."))

  12. Pat. Owner (Name of the patent owner (e.g. "General Motors, Inc.))

  13. CPC Class (the CPC class of the patent at issue).

  14. Owner Attorney (The name of the attorney for the patent owner in the IPR)

  15. Owner Firm (The firm for the patent owner in the IPR)

  16. Petitioner Attorney (The name of the attorney for the petitioner in the IPR)

  17. Petitioner Firm (The petitioner’s firm in the IPR)

  18. CV (A link to the CV for the expert in that IPR. Note, if a separately filed CV was not detected, this will link to the declaration under the assumption that the CV is appended to the declaration as an appendix.)

Declaration (A link to the declaration for that expert in the IPR)

Search by Patent Number

You can also search by patent number. This will show a list of examiners, sorted by experience, that have submitted declarations in cases in similar CPC classes to the CPC class of the patent number entered.

If you search by patent number, you’ll see a table with the following columns:

  1. Est. Hourly Rate (the estimated fee from the expert's most recent declaration doc that included a fee.)

  2. Expert Name (name of the expert)

  3. Subject Matter Experience (see this help article for more on experience scoring; only visible when searching patent number)

  4. CV (A link to the CV for the expert in that IPR. Note, if a separately filed CV was not detected, this will link to the declaration under the assumption that the CV is appended to the declaration as an appendix.)

  5. Declaration (A link to the declaration for that expert in the IPR)

  6. Pet. Appearances (Number of appearances on behalf of a petitioner that are contributing to the expert’s experience score for the searched patent)

  7. Pat. Owner Appearances (Number of appearances on behalf of a respondent that are contributing to the expert’s experience score for the searched patent)

Note, users can add a keyword search to a patent number search by clicking the “+ add keyword search” link on the upper left corner of the table. This is useful when a particular search produces a large number of experts in the search results.

Search by Keyword

You can also search by keyword to find experts related to the subject matter area you are interested in. Our system will comb through the declarations and CVs of all of the experts in our database to find ones containing your keyword or phrase. Just type your keyword or phrase into the search bar, and select "Keyword Search CVs and Declarations."

If you search by keyword, you’ll see a table with the following columns:

  • Expert Name: experts with your keyword or phrase in their declaration or CV

  • PTAB Trial Number: a link to documents relevant to the most recent PTAB Trial in which the expert was a witness

  • Est. Hourly Rate: Hourly rate listed by the expert in most recent declaration (where available).

  • Document: Links to the Expert's CV and/or Declaration that contains the keyword or phrase.

  • Document Date: The date of the document containing the keyword or phrase.

Client Matter Number

Once you are in the Expert Search Tool, you'll be automatically asked to add a client matter number. Although this is required, it does not affect your search and can be changed at any time.

Editing Columns

You can use the "Edit Columns" button to rearrange or delete columns or add columns to show the following:

  • Application Number: The application number for the original patent at issue.

  • Art Unit: The art unit for the patent at issue.

  • CPC Class: The CPC class for the patent at issue.

  • Patent Number: The patent number of the patent at issue.

  • Tech Center: The technology center for the patent at issue.

Expert Search Billing

Expert Search allows users to generate invoices on demand in order to bill through the cost of your expert search. To generate an invoice, go to the Settings icon in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, and select "Account Management."

Once on the account management screen, select "Invoicing."

Your table will then populate with your firm's previous expert searches. Simply click "Generate Invoice" on any of the rows to generate an invoice for that search. You can also add an optional PTAB trial number and description. Hit "Submit" and a .pdf of your invoice will be downloaded.

Invoices will automatically be downloaded as PDFs to the user’s computer, and the “invoice last generated” field will update automatically.
